The HSE says that “health and safety law applies to on-the-road work activities as to all work activities and the risks should be effectively managed within a health and safety system”.
Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to criminal charges being brought against management, as well as inviting civil law suits in the event of accidents. Both can be very costly.
ADVISA offers businesses and organisations an online tool to review what reasonable steps they have taken and still need to take to comply with these regulations, including:
Policy Statement
A written Driving at Work Policy must be implemented if you have five employees or more.
Risk Assessment
A risk assessment is to identify which 'at work' activities can cause harm to people, who those people may be, and what actions can be taken to eliminate or reduce those risks.
Control Measures to minimise risk
Various control measures can be implemented to reduce the possibility of harm to your employees or other road users.
Rules and Procedures
Rules and procedures for your employees help eliminate hazards and reduce risks relating to occupational road safety.
Records
If you employ five or more employees you are required to record the significant findings of their risk assessment. Even if you employ less than five it is recommended that you keep records of these findings.
Review and Communicate
You must monitor and review your assessment to ensure that the risks to your employees who drive for work, and others, are suitably controlled on an ongoing basis.
